"It is impossible to convey in words what I can tell with photos. The site gives one a small inkling of the history, scope, quality, and style of my work. Not only do I have the cars but also the people and flavor of the era." . . . Hal Crocker
"Take some time to experience “When Giants Raced” through the the eyes of Hal Crocker, an award-winning photojournalist whose work spans more than 6 decades. Crocker was one of the very few individuals privileged to access the behind-the-scenes action of the manufacturers pits garnering access to a world rarely seen or photographed. Every image in this gallery is part of a much larger historical archives of Crocker’s work. Come back soon as the content will continue to grow." . . . Nancy Suttles
Shown above: The year was 1970 and this race was Crocker’s introduction to big time professional sports car racing. He didn’t know it then, however, it was also the start of what would turn out to be his life’s work as a motorsports photo-journalist and only the second raced he ever attended. The first was a Formula 5000 event at Sebring where he met Jo Hoppen - Porsche’s North American Racing Director. After seeing his work, Jo hired Hal to cover the 24 Hours of Daytona with the main focus being on the Gulf- Wyer Porsche Team.
This was the first race of the season and the first time that the new Group 55 Supercars would square off. “With a cast of characters that read like a who’s who of racing, the stage was set for what had all the makings of one hell of a race. This proved to be a magic time in racing history,” says Crocker. “The 917 was truly a work of art.”
This iconic poster of the 917 is available for sale. Please contact Nancy Suttles for more information.
