From securing Porsche its debut Le Mans win to speed records and North American victories, this is the story of the 917. One that conquered the world, made history and has been an inspiration for Porsche motorsport ever since – including today’s Porsche 963 race car. (Source: Porsche)
When Giants Raced
The year was 1970 and this race was Hal Crocker’s introduction to professional sports car racing. He didn’t know it then, however, it was also the start of what would turn out to be his life’s work as a motorsports photo-journalist and only the second raced he ever attended.
The first was a Formula 5000 event at Sebring where he met Jo Hoppen, Porsche’s North American Racing Director. After seeing his work, Jo hired Hal to cover the 24 Hours of Daytona with the main focus being on the Gulf- Wyer Porsche Team.
This was the first race of the season and the first time that the new Group 55 Supercars would square off. “With a cast of characters that read like a who’s who of racing, the stage was set for what had all the makings of one hell of a race. This proved to be a magic time in racing history,” says Crocker.
“The 917 was truly a work of art.”
Crocker’s lens captured the tension, the elegance, and the raw energy of that moment in time. His now-iconic image of the Porsche 917 has become more than just a photograph—it is a testament to a pivotal chapter in racing history.
Now available as a limited-edition print, this collectible piece of art invites enthusiasts, and historians to own a fragment of racing history—an image from a time When Giants Raced.
